In 2004, he was awarded Nobel Prize in Chemistry for his discovery with Avram Hershko and Irwin Rose, of ubiquitin-mediated protein degradation. Interestingly, tocotrienol targets HMG-CoA reductase, a rate limiting enzyme for cholesterol biosynthesis, for ubiquitin-mediated degradation. The mechanism is an inportant step mediating the cholesterol lowering effect of tocotrienol.
